Nature and function
Metis is an Oceanid personifying cunning wisdom, strategic intelligence, and prudence. Her nature combines deep reflection with the ability to devise subtle solutions. She belongs to the generation of aquatic divinities linked to the ancient order.
Union with Zeus and destiny
Metis is the first wife of Zeus and plays an essential role in the consolidation of his power. It is she who prepares the potion that forces Cronos to regurgitate the gods he had swallowed. However, a prophecy announces that a child born of Metis could surpass Zeus.
To avert this threat, Zeus swallows Metis while she is pregnant. This act does not destroy her: Metis continues to live within him, embodying the inner wisdom of the king of the gods.
Birth of Athena
Metis gives birth to Athena within the body of Zeus, and from this tightly integrated union the fully armed goddess emerges. This account makes Metis the ultimate source of Olympian foresight and strategy.
Iconography
Although rarely represented, she sometimes appears as a serene woman associated with water or with attributes of prudence. Her identity is more conceptualized than depicted.
