Nature and function
Zeus is the god of the sky, thunder, and lightning, but above all the king of the gods, the one who upholds divine order.
His authority is not founded on tyranny: he listens, arbitrates, rewards, and punishes. He guarantees oaths, protects hospitality (xenia), and serves as the ultimate recourse when conflict threatens the balance of the world.
Birth and ascent
Son of Cronus and Rhea, he escapes the tragic fate of his siblings, all swallowed by their father.
Raised in secret in Crete, he overthrows Cronus, frees the Olympians, and leads the Titanomachy, which seals his rise to power.
His rule is further secured through his victories against the Giants and primordial monsters such as Typhon.
Attributes
- The thunderbolt, forged by the Cyclopes.
- The eagle, symbol of majesty and clear sight.
- The Olympian throne, center of divine sovereignty.
Relations and influence
Zeus intervenes in a vast number of myths, whether in:
- political decisions within Olympus,
- mythic wars such as the Trojan War or the Typhonomachy,
- the protection or testing of favored mortals and demigods (Perseus, Heracles),
- or exemplary punishments against oath-breakers and tyrants.
His lineage runs throughout Greek mythology, encompassing gods, heroes, mythical kings, and at times even monsters.
