Nature and function
Hestia is the goddess of the hearth, the sacred fire, and hospitality. She represents domestic stability, communal cohesion, and the immobile center around which human life is organized. Her presence is discreet but essential: she almost never intervenes in narratives, yet she symbolically structures the entirety of Greek society.
Ritual importance
In every household, the hearth of Hestia is the first fire lit and the last to be extinguished. In the cities, her sacred fire burns permanently in the Prytaneion, guaranteeing the continuity of the civic body. No sacrifice begins without an offering to Hestia, which makes her the first and the last divinity honored in rites.
Character and symbolism
Hestia embodies inner peace, constancy, and purity. Unlike most Olympians, she refuses struggles for power and never leaves Olympus. Her role is not narrative but fundamental: she is the fixed point around which everything else can move.
Representation
She is depicted as a calm and modest woman, sometimes seated near the fire, holding a branch or a torch. Her iconography highlights sobriety and silent gentleness.
