Nature and function
Hera is the queen of the gods, goddess of marriage, family life, and institutional legitimacy. Her function extends far beyond the purely conjugal sphere: she embodies social order, the stability of unions, and the continuity of lineages.
Birth and position on Olympus
Daughter of Cronos and Rhea, sister and wife of Zeus, Hera takes part in the establishment of the new divine order after the defeat of the Titans. Her authority rests on dignity, the symbolic power of her role, and a sovereignty that places her at the summit of the feminine hierarchy of Olympus.
Role in myths
Hera often intervenes to defend the institution of marriage, particularly in the face of Zeus’s infidelities. This motif fuels many myths in which her jealousy serves as a narrative engine, but it would be reductive to limit her to this aspect alone. Hera protects married women, supports legitimate unions, watches over childbirth, and punishes adultery, whether divine or human.
She also acts as a political force: she supports the Achaeans in the Iliad, manipulates the gods when cosmic balance requires it, and works to maintain the order that Zeus may at times disturb through caprice.
Iconography
Hera is depicted crowned and majestic, sometimes holding a scepter or a pomegranate, a symbol of fertility and continuity. The peacock, her sacred animal, frequently accompanies her images.
