Nature and function

Poseidon is the god of the seas, master of the depths and of the violent phenomena that shake the world: storms, earthquakes, and the crashing of waves. He embodies the wild and untamed aspect of the cosmos, capable both of maritime generosity and of brutal destruction.

Role in mythology

Brother of Zeus and Hades, he receives dominion over the sea during the division of the world after the Titanomachy. Poseidon intervenes in the founding of many cities, rivals Athena for Athens, protects sailors, but can also be relentless. The epic of Odysseus bears witness to his lasting resentment and punitive power.

Domains of influence

He is the god of horses, symbols of strength and impulse, and of marine or shifting springs. The link between the sea and earthquakes makes him the “Earth-Shaker,” master of telluric forces.

Iconography

Poseidon is depicted as bearded and majestic, holding a trident. He may be accompanied by marine creatures such as hippocamps or dolphins. His image evokes the sovereign power of the aquatic world.
