Nature and functions
Cronos is one of the major Titans, son of Gaia and Ouranos. He represents destructive time, the ancient order, and the power that precedes the age of the Olympian gods. His reign belongs to a primitive world in which cosmic forces confront one another directly, without mediation.
Rise and reign
Urged on by his mother, Cronos overthrows Ouranos by mutilating him, thus putting an end to his oppression. He then becomes the sovereign of the cosmos and inaugurates the Golden Age, an idealized period during which humans live without suffering or injustice. However, fearing the prophecy that he would be overthrown by one of his children, he devours them one after another at birth.
Fall and legacy
Rhea, his consort, saves Zeus by hiding him in Crete. When Zeus reaches adulthood, he forces Cronos to disgorge his brothers and sisters and leads the Titanomachy, a cosmic war that marks the end of the reign of the Titans. Cronos is ultimately defeated and relegated to Tartarus or exiled, depending on the traditions.
Representation and symbols
Cronos is often depicted with a sickle or a harp, in reference to the weapon used to overthrow Ouranos. He embodies both founding violence and the devouring power of time, a duality that durably influences later mythological narratives.
