Nature and identity

Phoebe (or Phoïbe in some transliterations) is one of the original Titanides, daughter of Gaia and Ouranos. She embodies mental clarity, the purity of knowledge, and the prophetic dimension of the ancient divinities.
Her name evokes the idea of light, though not a physical light: an intellectual light, the one that reveals the hidden meaning of things.

Union and offspring

Phoebe unites with her brother Coeus, Titan of celestial knowledge. Together, they give birth to two essential figures:

  • Leto, future mother of Apollo and Artemis,
  • Asteria, linked to nocturnal powers and ancestress of Hecate according to certain traditions.

Through this lineage, Phoebe becomes the grandmother of the divine twins and occupies a major place in the genealogical tree of luminous and oracular powers.

Connection with prophecy

In certain traditions, particularly those associated with the sanctuary of Delphi, Phoebe is said to have passed the prophetic tripod on to Apollo.
Although this version is late and not universal, it conveys a strong symbolic idea:
Phoebe represents the transition between archaic (Titanic) prophecy and Olympian prophecy.

She embodies an ancient wisdom, prior to that of the gods of Olympus, and prepares the way for Apollo, god of measure and intellectual light.

Place in the Titanomachy

Phoebe, like most Titanides, does not take an active part in the war against Zeus.
After the Olympians’ victory, she fades from the narratives in favor of her descendants, marking the transition between the age of the Titans and the new order.

Iconography

There is no established ancient canonical representation of Phoebe, but modern iconographic traditions depict her as:

  • a noble and serene woman,
  • surrounded by a pale glow,
  • sometimes associated with an ancient tripod or lunar symbols,
  • evoking inner clarity and silent wisdom.

Her iconography is more spiritual than material, faithful to her nature.
