Nature and function
Gaia is the primordial Earth, one of the first entities to emerge from Chaos. She embodies the very foundation of the ordered universe, mother of the sky, the mountains, the sea, and numerous divinities and creatures. Her nature is not anthropomorphic: she is both a divine being and the ground itself.
Generations and offspring
Gaia gives birth to Ouranos (Sky), the Titans, the Cyclopes, and the Hecatoncheires. She plays an essential role in the great cosmic overthrows: she helps Cronos to dethrone Ouranos, then supports the Giants in their revolt against Olympus. Her will influences changes of era and the passage from one divine order to another.
Mythological role
Gaia does not act like an Olympian goddess: she represents the matricial force that guides and corrects imbalances within the cosmos. She intervenes to restore a natural rather than moral justice, and her actions often aim to counter tyranny or the abuse of power.
Iconography
She is sometimes depicted as a woman emerging from the earth, half integrated into the landscape, surrounded by fruits and natural creatures. Most often, however, she is evoked rather than represented, as she embodies the Earth itself.
