Nature and function
Ouranos is the primordial deity of the Sky, one of the first entities to emerge after the birth of Gaia. He represents the celestial vault itself, covering and encompassing the Earth. His nature is not originally anthropomorphic: he is the living Sky, a cosmic force rather than an Olympian god.
Role in creation
From his union with Gaia are born the Titans, the Cyclopes, and the Hecatoncheires. He attempts to keep these children confined within their mother’s womb, creating a fundamental tension that lies at the origin of the first upheavals of the cosmos.
Fall and legacy
Urged on by Gaia, Cronos overthrows Ouranos by mutilating him with a sickle. The blood and seed of Ouranos give rise to new beings, among them the Erinyes, the Giants, and Aphrodite according to certain traditions. His fall marks the transition from primordial order to the age of the Titans, the first major cosmic shift in Greek mythology.
Iconography
Ouranos is rarely represented in human form. When he is, his appearance incorporates celestial motifs: star-strewn skin, ethereal form, a fusion of light and night.
