Origin and identity
Dione is an ancient female divinity whose status varies according to the traditions. Her name is the feminine form of Dios, a form linked to Zeus, which suggests a close relationship with the king of the gods. She appears as an archaic figure, predating the stabilization of the classical Olympian pantheon.
In some traditions, Dione is counted among the Titanesses, which explains both her antiquity and her gradual fading in favor of more firmly established Olympian figures.
Role in mythology
Dione appears notably in the Iliad, where she heals Aphrodite after she is wounded by Diomedes. In this context, she is presented as the mother of Aphrodite, which constitutes an important alternative to the more famous version of Aphrodite’s birth from sea foam.
Her role is essentially passive and symbolic. She embodies a divine maternal figure, linked to the generation of the gods and to the transmission of the sacred order.
Relationships
- Union: Zeus (according to certain traditions)
- Child: Aphrodite (Homeric version)
Dione does not possess an abundant lineage nor a narrative cycle of her own. She belongs to an ancient stratum of mythology, gradually eclipsed by the Olympians.
Iconography
Dione is very rarely represented. When she is, she appears as a seated, veiled goddess with a solemn bearing, sometimes alongside Zeus or Aphrodite. Her iconography emphasizes her ancient character and her maternal function rather than action or power.
