Origins and mythic role
Semele is a Theban princess, daughter of Cadmus and Harmonia. Though mortal, she holds an exceptional place in Greek mythology through her union with Zeus and her role as the mother of the god Dionysus.
Union with Zeus and tragic end
Loved by Zeus, Semele becomes the target of Hera’s jealousy. Disguised, the goddess persuades her to ask Zeus to reveal himself in his full divine splendor. Unable to break a sworn oath, Zeus appears in the brilliance of thunder, and Semele perishes, struck down by a vision bearable only to immortals.
Birth of Dionysus
Before her death, Semele is pregnant. Zeus rescues the child from her body and carries him in his thigh until term, making Dionysus a god “twice-born.” Semele is later welcomed to Olympus under the name Thyone – Thyia according to certain traditions – obtaining a rare immortality among mortals.
Representation
Artists often depict her as young, noble, and astonished by the divine apparition. Her figure expresses both human fragility and extraordinary destiny.
